How to Install Rear Glass in a Beetle

How to Install Rear Glass in a Beetle

Installing the rear glass in a Volkswagen Beetle can be a difficult process and should be done with the help of an assistant. The rubber window seal must be installed correctly to protect the interior of the car from leaks. The window seal has two curved surfaces: The large one goes on the outside of the vehicle and the small one goes on the inside of the vehicle. Next to the outer surface of the seal is a narrow indentation that is square in shape with grooves along the bottom. This indentation is where the window glass is placed. The rounded indentation is where the flange of the car will be placed. The flap that includes the small curved surface must be pulled inside the car during installation.

Instructions

Place the Seal on the Glass

    1

Locate the squared indentation in the window seal and the larger surface that goes on the outside of the car.

    2

Insert the window glass into this groove, making sure that the exterior surface of the seal is on the same side as the exterior surface of the glass. Do not use lubrication during this step.

    3

Check the entire seal to make sure it is firmly and completely installed on the glass.

Install the Window

    4

Place the cord in the rounded indentation in the seal, making sure that the ends of the cord overlap for at least 18 inches on either the top or the bottom.

    5

Add lubrication to the indentation on top of the cord. To make a good lubricant that is easy to clean up, mix 1 part soap with 9 parts water.

    6

Carefully place the window in the opening in the vehicle with the help of your assistant. Make sure that the glass is square in the opening and that the ends of the cord are inside the car. Check that the outer seal fits properly over the exterior of the car.

    7

Pull on one end of the cord from inside the car while your assistant applies gentle pressure to the section of glass you are installing. This will pull the inside seal into the car. Stop when you reach the first corner.

    8

Pull on the other end of the cord in the same way until you reach the opposite corner. Continue to alternate pulling one cord, and then the other, to complete the seal. Do not get one side too far ahead of the other side.

    9

Slap the window seal with your hand at any place where the window does not appear to be completely set in place. Do this only when the inner seal has been completely pulled inside the car.

    10

Clean the window and the window seal to remove any excess lubricant.

How to Install an Oil Pressure Gauge

Basically, an oil gauge is used to indicate oil pressure levels. It is commonly installed on the dashboard of a vehicle in order to help the driver to properly monitor the oil pressure levels. When the warning light on the gauge lights up, it is an indication that the oil pressure level in the engine is very low; hence it must be replenished immediately to avoid engine damage. That being said, the installation of an oil pressure gauge is highly important.

In normal conditions the needle on your oil pressure gauge will remain in the same position and you will become used to it being there. You need to be aware when the needle begins to move downwards as this will normally happen long before the warning light comes on and gives you more time to prevent damage to your engine. If your car is more than a few years old, the gauge is indicating that your oil needs changing or that the usual wear and tear of age is beginning to happen. There may be a great deal of life left in your vehicle, but you will need to carefully watch your oil level from today. If the needle dips wildly downwards and then back up to a normal level, there may already be damage or a drastically low oil level. It can prove to be very expensive to ignore the warning signs.

Installing an oil gauge so that you can keep an eye on your oil pressure is not the simplest task and is probably best carried out by a professional, but if you want to do it yourself here is some information that may help.

Whether you will be installing an electric or mechanical oil pressure gauge, it would be ideal that you know how to properly integrate it into your vehicle system. To help you accomplish that, here is a detailed installation guide that you can follow:

Step one: It is critical that you know where to properly place the gauge. You should know that the port where the gauge must be placed is normally situated six inches behind the vehicles oil filter. In order to easily find the port, you may have to remove the side front wheel on the passengers side. Once it has been removed, you will see a silver-colored filter (located behind the factory oil pressure switch) that has two wires attached to the electrical connector.

Step two: After locating the port, you have to first drain the oil before removing the electric connector present on the pressure switch.

Step three: Once done, you may now disconnect the switch. The rest of the procedure will depend on the type of gauge that you need to install. Normally, pressure gauges include an installation manual, which you have to carefully read and understand, in order to ensure proper installation.

Step four: When the oil gauge has already been installed, make a test run to know if it is already functional. If you are unsure that you did the right thing, it is best that you find a professional mechanic to do the installation for you.

How to Install a Brake Booster

How to Install a Brake Booster

A brake booster is a device that provides extra braking power using either an electric or hydraulic mechanism to "boost" the brake power you get from stepping on the brake pedal. Brake boosters often work on vacuum pressure, but they also work in tandem with your master cylinder--which holds your brake fluid--to push brake fluid through your brake system. Over time, your booster may develop a vacuum leak or fail completely. If this happens, youll need to know how to install a new one.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood and locate the brake booster. This is usually a round-shaped disc about 3 to 4 inches in thickness, but may be larger depending on your vehicle. It will be attached to the brake master cylinder on the firewall, usually on the drivers side.

    2

Loosen and remove the tube nuts holding the brake line to the master cylinder with the open-ended wrench. There are four of these (four brake lines) that you will have to remove. Make sure you make note of where the lines are being disconnected from because they will have to be reconnected to the same area you removed them from. You may want to use masking tape and a permanent marker to mark the location of where the brake lines came from. Youll have to turn each tube nut counterclockwise to loosen and be especially careful that you do not damage the end of the nut while you are loosening it. These nuts, which damage easily, are a critical component that secures your brake line to the master cylinder.

    3

Unbolt the two bolts holding the master cylinder to the brake booster and remove the master cylinder. Be sure to catch the brake fluid that drips and do not get any on your vehicles paint.

    4

Some brake boosters have bolts that you will be able to remove from the firewall. If your brake booster has these, unbolt them.

    5

Unbolt the five or six--depending on your vehicle--nuts holding the brake booster in place under the dash behind your vehicles brake pedal. Some of these may be difficult to reach, but you should be able to get them all with a regular socket wrench. You may have to use a socket extender to reach these nuts on some vehicles.

    6

Pull the retaining clip or pin holding the brake booster to the brake pedal. To do this, pull the clip holding the pin in place using pliers. Then tap the pin out with the end of the pliers. The brake pedal should now be free of the brake booster.

    7

Pull the brake booster out of the firewall and out of the engine bay.

    8

Lower the new brake booster into the engine bay where the old brake booster used to be. Align the mounting bolts with the holes in the firewall and slide the new brake booster into place so that it sits tight against the firewall.

    9

Align the mounting bracket on the back of the brake pedal with the bracket on the brake booster (inside the vehicle). Slide the retaining pin through both brackets, connecting them together. Replace the clip holding the retaining pin in place. There is a small hole in one end of the pin. Push the retaining clip into this hole.

    10

Replace the bolts you removed from the back of the brake booster underneath the dash and behind the brake pedal, and re-tighten them (clockwise). You may need to use a socket extension to reach these bolts.

    11

Replace the bolts on the firewall (if your vehicle had them), and re-tighten (clockwise).

    12

Slide the back of the master cylinder (there is a hole in the back) over the end of the brake booster piston and slide the master cylinder back until it sits flush against the brake booster.

    13

Replace the master cylinder mounting bolts and re-tighten them (clockwise).

    14

Replace the tube nuts into the areas where you initially removed them and re-tighten. When tightening tube nuts, turn them counterclockwise until you feel resistance. Then give them an additional one-quarter turn.

How to Install an Older Model Auto Windshield

How to Install an Older Model Auto Windshield

Classic car restoration is popular with both professionals and amateurs. Hard to find parts, such as windshields, are readily available for a price. Home mechanics might wonder if windshield replacement on older model cars is a feasible job for amateurs. This job requires a good deal of patience and persistence, but it is not impossible as long as you have the right parts and tools.

Instructions

    1

Place the new windshield on wooden blocks or sawhorses, with the inside surface facing up. Optionally, squeeze a bead of flow grade butyl sealant around the inside edge of the new windshield gasket with a caulking gun. Install the rubber gasket around the windshield.

    2

Insert a piece of 3/8-inch nylon rope into the outside edge of the windshield gasket, beginning and ending at the bottom center of the windshield. Leave about 1 foot of rope dangling out of the gasket and cut any excess rope to length. Tape the tails of the rope to the middle of the inside of the windshield.

    3

Set the windshield into position on the outside of the car with the help of an assistant. Have your assistant gently push on the outside bottom edge of the windshield.

    4

Pull on one of the rope ends from the inside of the car, working toward a bottom corner, while your assistant gently pushes from the outside. The rope will cause the rubber gasket to wrap around the metal frame to the inside of the car. Pull on both rope ends, first the bottom edge, then the side edges and then the top edge of the windshield gasket. Pull the rope completely out to finish the job.

    5

Inspect the rubber gasket fully, inside and out. Straighten out any kinks with a small screwdriver or a cotter pin tool.

How to install H7 HID conversion kit on Peugeot 308

Step 1
HID conversion kit installation begins with the HARDEST step, i.e choosing and picking out the right HID kit - there is a large range of HID kits to choose from - costing less than RM150.... to more than RM1500 per pair! The choices are also depending on personal preferences and needs - such as color temperature and brightness.

For some people [especially ahbengs], appearance plays a large part in their purchase, and they might wish to purchase a HID conversion kit with HID lights of special colors. But take note the highest LEGAL color temperature is 4700K.
Next, make sure the kit will fit in the car headlamps properly. Some H7 anti-glare caps are designed to prevent insertion of HID tubes because the reflectors are not designed for them - Not all HID lights are compatible with all Peugeot 308!. Must check the width, height and depth.
ANTI-GLARE CAP
the dome-shaped anti-glare caps of different type
Some Peugeot 308 headlights cannot accept standard 45mm H7 HID tube [restricted by the anti-glare cap design] . However there is H7RC HID measuring only 40mm .
Once the right HID conversion kit has been decided the installation can be very simple if u know how to replace the H7 bulbs and understand simple electrical connections as shown in the figure.

Step 2Remove the OEM headlight bulbs [not easy if u dont know the mechanism]
H7 lockpins
On 308 the locking pins for the H7 bulbs cannot be seen, u only can feel to push and spread the pin legs apart in order to remove the OEM bulbs before inserting the HIDs.

Step 3Replace the OEM headlight bulbs with HID bulbs.
HID BASE

Step 4Plug the HID bulbs high voltage leads into the ballasts HV connector provided with the HID kit. Test the HID ballast wiring for length, as HID lights use special wiring that cannot be extended.
HV CONNECTOR

Step 5Mount the ballasts as close to the headlight bulbs as possible. Use double sided tape to mount the ballasts securely to flat part of the chassis below the head lamp assembly.
BALLAST
Do not mount the ballasts else where otherwise they will be exposed to excessive amounts of moisture or heat. Once mounted, connect the OEM headlight harness [females] to the ballast input power supply [red and black wires] to trigger and power up the HIDs.
SUPPLY LINE

Step 6Test the HIDs for proper operation. It may take up to a few seconds for the bulbs to illuminate completely.
