How to Replace the Driver Side Window in a 2000 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra was introduced to the United States in the 1992 model year. It was equipped with a 2.0-liter, in-line, four-cylinder engine capable of producing 140-horsepower. The 2000 Elantra was made available with standard power windows and door locks. Replacing the drivers side window on the 2000 Elantra requires some mechanical ability, as you will be required to remove and reinstall interior body panels as well. Replacing this window should take approximately two hours if you are a novice.

Instructions

    Open the drivers door of the Elantra and sit in the drivers seat. Insert the ignition key into the ignition, and turn the key to the "II" or accessories position. Roll the drivers window down about one quarter to halfway down. Turn the key off and remove the key from the ignition for safety.

    Remove the power window switch from the door by using a flat head screwdriver to pry the front of the switch out first. Pull the switch out by hand. Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch panel by hand. Remove the screw from the center of the inside door handle bezel, using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the handle bezel from the door panel. Remove the three screws from the bottom of the door panel, and pull the door panel outward at the bottom to release the plastic body clips.

    Pull the entire door panel upward and toward your body from inside the door, to free the panel from the door frame completely. Hold the door panel in your left hand, toward the middle of the panel lengthwise. Reach around the rear of the door panel in the front, and pull the speaker connector from the door speaker. Remove the door panel completely and set it outside of your work area. When you are finished you should be looking at the inside of the door frame and the attached weather seal.

    Pull the weather seal downward, starting at both top corners. The weather seal is simply held in place by a specialized glue that constantly remains tacky. Peel the seal downward until you expose the inner workings of the upper window regulator. This is a horizontal bar that runs parallel to the bottom of the door glass.

    Remove the four mounting nuts, two per end, from the bottom of the door glass, using a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket. Step to the outside of the drivers door and gently close the drivers door against the door jamb, but not so that it latches shut. Remove the door glass by pulling it upward and outward, away from the car. Do not apply pressure in any direction or angle during this operation or you will break the old door glass in your hand. Remove the old door glass completely.

    Install the new door glass into the door frame, standing outside the vehicle. Visually inspect the exposed window tracks on the front and rear ends of the door frame to ensure proper alignment within the door frame. Allow the door glass to rest on the top bar of the window regulator. Carefully open the drivers door and sit back in the drivers seat. Align the bottom of the door glass regulator tabs with the top of the window regulator mounting bolts.

    Install the window hold-down nuts onto the regulator bolts. Tighten the nuts using a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket until they are snug, then turn the ratchet 1/4-turn farther. This "snug-and-a-quarter" method of tightening is used when no torque is truly needed on a bolt or nut. Applying too much torque to the base of the window will break the new door glass. Tighten all four mounting nuts. Reinstall the door weather seal back up and onto the door frame. Smooth the outer edges of the weather seal down by hand to adhere it to the frame.

    Hang the top of the door panel back onto the door frame, but do not insert the panel just yet. Reach around the front of the panel, and plug the electrical connector back into the door speaker. When you are finished with the speaker connector, then you can insert the top of the door panel down into the door frame. Press the panel downward until it seats in the window frame. Press the door panel at the bottom, to reattach the plastic panel clips.

    Pull the window motor switch panel wires through the panel mounting hole in the door. Reconnect the connector to the rear of the window control panel. Install the rear edge of the control panel into the door panel, then pop the front of the switches downward until it snaps in firmly. Reinstall the three bottom mounting screws through the door panel and into the door. Turn the screws until they are snug with the Phillips screwdriver.

    Install the inner door handle bezel back in behind the handle. Insert the screw into the center of the bezel and tighten the screw until its snug.

How to Do a Brake Job on a 2000 Ford Mustang

Attention to detail is key in a trouble-free brake job on the 2000 Ford Mustang. Equipped with four-wheel disc brakes and a Bosch 5.3 anti-lock braking system, the Mustang finally received the stopping power it needed. In exchange for this refinement, tolerances in areas such as maximum allowable run-out are very tight when compared to previous Mustangs. Resurfacing or replacement of the brake rotors and special care when replacing the brake pads cannot be overlooked when servicing the brake system on this car.

Instructions

Front brakes

    Position wheel chocks behind and in front of the rear wheels. Loosen the front lug-nuts one half turn. Do not remove them at this time. Raise the front of the vehicle, using a floor jack, until the front wheels are off the ground. Slide jack stands under the front sub-frame and lower the car onto the jack stands. Remove the front wheels and place them aside to prevent tripping hazards.

    Remove the rubber dust boots that cover the caliper slide pins, and unbolt the two 10 millimeter slide pins that attach the caliper to the caliper bracket. Use a large screwdriver to pry the caliper up and off the rotor. Hang the caliper out of the way using a piece of stiff wire or coat hanger. Remove the large bolts that attach the caliper bracket to the steering knuckle. Remove the caliper bracket and slide the rotor off the hub assembly.

    Take the brake rotors to your local auto parts store or repair shop and have them checked for thickness and run-out. Maximum allowable run-out is 0.001 inch on the front rotors. Minimum thickness is 0.970 inch on the front rotors and 0.500 on the rear rotors. Replace the rotor if it cannot be machined to these specifications. Rotors that are too thin will warp easily, and rotors that have excessive run-out will cause brake pedal pulsations and decreased brake efficiency.

    Slip the brake rotor onto the hub assembly. Position the caliper bracket over the rotor and bolt it securely to the steering knuckle. Place the new pads into the bracket.

    Open the bleeder screw on the top of the caliper and use a C-clamp to push the caliper piston into the caliper housing. Close the bleeder screw and remove the C-clamp. Apply a small amount of silicon brake grease to the slide pins. Slide the caliper over the new pads, and bolt it to the caliper bracket using the 10 millimeter slide pins

    Replace the wheels and lower the car to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts one final time with the car sitting on the ground.

Rear Brakes

    Lift the rear of the vehicle in the same manner described in Section 1. Place the jack stands under the rear axle tubes and lower the car onto them. Remove the rear wheels and place them out of the work area.

    Remove the two 10 millimeter slide pins that attach the caliper to the rear caliper bracket. Pry the caliper off the rotor using a large screwdriver. Slide the brake rotor off the hub assembly. and have it measured and machined. The maximum allowable run-out for the rear rotors is 0.002 inch, and minimum thickness is 0.500. Replace any rotor that doesnt meet this specification.

    Open the bleeder screw on top of the caliper. The rear caliper is equipped with an actuator for the parking brakes and requires the piston to be screwed into the caliper housing. Use a caliper piston tool to twist and push the caliper piston into the caliper housing.

    Install the new pads onto the caliper bracket and slip the caliper into place. Apply a small amount of silicon brake grease to the slide pin bolts and bolt the caliper to the bracket.

    Replace the rear wheels and lower the car to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts one final time.

    Top off the brake fluid in the master cylinder and pump the brake pedal to expand the calipers into the pads.
