How to Replace Window Glass in an XJS

The Jaguar XJS was a luxury, grand-touring car first produced in 1975. The vehicles V-12 engine was a cause for much discussion for many right up until it was decommissioned in 1996. The XJS was based upon the popular XJ saloon. In 1981, the XJS received a high-efficiencuy efficient engine that raised the power of models sold in the U.S. to 263 hp.

Instructions

    Open up the door containing the broken glass. Remove the door-panel screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Carefully lift the door panel away from the door.

    Pull the water deflector away from the door. Pull it toward you until it comes free.

    3

    Lower the window regulator to its lowest possible position. The window regulator is a metallic. cross-shaped component. It features a horizontal bar at the top that connects to the window.

    Remove the two bolts which connect the window to the window regulator; use a hex wrench. Lift the window out of the frame.

    Slide a new window in to the window frame. Line up the bolt holes on the bottom of the window with those on the regulator . Secure the window in place by reattaching the two bolts. Reconnect the water deflector and door panel.

How to Replace the Rear Brake Rotors on a 1993 Lumina

The process for removing the rotors from the rear wheels is essentially the same as that for the front wheels on the Chevy Lumina. The disc brakes on the automobile are much easier to manage than drum brakes. This is primarily because there are no springs to deal with. You wouldnt usually change the brake rotors without changing the brake pads as well. However, you still may need to replace the rotors for one reason or another. It doesnt take very long, but when you do need to replace one, you should replace the rotors on both wheels on that axle at the same time.

Instructions

    1

    Park the car on a level surface and place the wheel chocks in front of the front wheels. Place a jack stand under the car and raise it up to the frame close to the jacking point.

    Remove the wheel using the lug wrench and set it off to the side. Remove the brake caliper using a socket and ratchet to loosen the caliper bolts. Secure the caliper to the spring or shock absorber using a wire tie. You should never allow the caliper to hang or you will damage the brake line.

    Pull the old rotor off of the wheel assembly by pulling it straight out. If it doesnt come off easily, use the rubber mallet to hit it until it breaks loose.

    Put the new rotor on the wheel assembly. Place the brake caliper on the wheel assembly over the rotor and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Put the wheel back on the car and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench.

    5

    Remove the jack stand from under the car and lower the vehicle to the ground. Repeat the process on the other wheel.

How to Replace the Windshield Trim on a Mazda Miata

The Miata is a small, lightweight roadster produced by Mazda. It is a rear-drive car popular in autocrossing and road racing due to its near 50/50 weight distribution characteristics. The standard Miata comes with a five-speed manual transmission, though, for an additional cost, you can purchase an automatic transmission. Like most roadsters, the Miata has a convertible top. Over time, especially if the exterior trim is not taken care of, the exterior trim molding around the windshield can---and will---fade and crack. This can be an eyesore, but it can also compromise the seal around the end of the windshield allowing water, dirt and debris to get behind the molding. To prevent this from happening, replace the windshield trim if it is damaged.

Instructions

    Clean the windshield with Windex before starting. You do not want dirt or debris to get lodged into the pinchweld area or underneath the new molding.

    Fold the windshield wiper arm up away from the windshield until it locks into a vertical position.

    3

    Remove the nuts holding the wiper arms in place and pull the wiper arms off.

    4

    Slide the tip of the trim removal tool between the trim and the windshield. Work the tool all around the outer edge of the windshield until the trim comes off.

    5

    Install the new trim. The new trim is installed in the opposite way the old trim was removed. Orient the trim so that it fits tightly between the frame and the windshield. You may need to use the removal tool to align and adjust the trim as you move along the perimeter of the glass. Force the trim into place with your hand.

You would typically change the rotors on a 4X4 Dodge truck when you change the brake pads. Reasons why you would need to change the rotors include warping, grooves from bad brake pads, cracking, or they may just be too thin. It does not take long to replace the rotors. You can expect each wheel to take about 30 minutes to complete, and you can do the job in your driveway.

Instructions

    Park the Dodge on a level surface, and turn the key off. Place a set of wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Raise the truck with the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under it near the jacking point, and raise it to the frame. Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench, and take the wheel off the truck.

    Loosen the caliper bolts with the socket and ratchet. Pull the caliper from the mounting bracket. Secure the caliper to the strut using a wire tie. Remove the retaining clips from the wheel lugs using the pliers. Pull the rotor away from the wheel assembly.

    Place the new rotor on the wheel assembly. Push the retainer clips on the wheel lugs with the pliers. Cut the wire tie holding the caliper to the strut using the pliers. Place the caliper on the mounting bracket and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet.

    Put the wheel on the Dodge, and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the truck. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Repeat the process on the other wheel.

How to Replace the Driver Side Window in a 2000 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra was introduced to the United States in the 1992 model year. It was equipped with a 2.0-liter, in-line, four-cylinder engine capable of producing 140-horsepower. The 2000 Elantra was made available with standard power windows and door locks. Replacing the drivers side window on the 2000 Elantra requires some mechanical ability, as you will be required to remove and reinstall interior body panels as well. Replacing this window should take approximately two hours if you are a novice.

Instructions

    1

    Open the drivers door of the Elantra and sit in the drivers seat. Insert the ignition key into the ignition, and turn the key to the "II" or accessories position. Roll the drivers window down about one quarter to halfway down. Turn the key off and remove the key from the ignition for safety.

    Remove the power window switch from the door by using a flat head screwdriver to pry the front of the switch out first. Pull the switch out by hand. Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch panel by hand. Remove the screw from the center of the inside door handle bezel, using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the handle bezel from the door panel. Remove the three screws from the bottom of the door panel, and pull the door panel outward at the bottom to release the plastic body clips.

    Pull the entire door panel upward and toward your body from inside the door, to free the panel from the door frame completely. Hold the door panel in your left hand, toward the middle of the panel lengthwise. Reach around the rear of the door panel in the front, and pull the speaker connector from the door speaker. Remove the door panel completely and set it outside of your work area. When you are finished you should be looking at the inside of the door frame and the attached weather seal.

    Pull the weather seal downward, starting at both top corners. The weather seal is simply held in place by a specialized glue that constantly remains tacky. Peel the seal downward until you expose the inner workings of the upper window regulator. This is a horizontal bar that runs parallel to the bottom of the door glass.

    Remove the four mounting nuts, two per end, from the bottom of the door glass, using a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket. Step to the outside of the drivers door and gently close the drivers door against the door jamb, but not so that it latches shut. Remove the door glass by pulling it upward and outward, away from the car. Do not apply pressure in any direction or angle during this operation or you will break the old door glass in your hand. Remove the old door glass completely.

    Install the new door glass into the door frame, standing outside the vehicle. Visually inspect the exposed window tracks on the front and rear ends of the door frame to ensure proper alignment within the door frame. Allow the door glass to rest on the top bar of the window regulator. Carefully open the drivers door and sit back in the drivers seat. Align the bottom of the door glass regulator tabs with the top of the window regulator mounting bolts.

    Install the window hold-down nuts onto the regulator bolts. Tighten the nuts using a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket until they are snug, then turn the ratchet 1/4-turn farther. This "snug-and-a-quarter" method of tightening is used when no torque is truly needed on a bolt or nut. Applying too much torque to the base of the window will break the new door glass. Tighten all four mounting nuts. Reinstall the door weather seal back up and onto the door frame. Smooth the outer edges of the weather seal down by hand to adhere it to the frame.

    Hang the top of the door panel back onto the door frame, but do not insert the panel just yet. Reach around the front of the panel, and plug the electrical connector back into the door speaker. When you are finished with the speaker connector, then you can insert the top of the door panel down into the door frame. Press the panel downward until it seats in the window frame. Press the door panel at the bottom, to reattach the plastic panel clips.

    Pull the window motor switch panel wires through the panel mounting hole in the door. Reconnect the connector to the rear of the window control panel. Install the rear edge of the control panel into the door panel, then pop the front of the switches downward until it snaps in firmly. Reinstall the three bottom mounting screws through the door panel and into the door. Turn the screws until they are snug with the Phillips screwdriver.

    Install the inner door handle bezel back in behind the handle. Insert the screw into the center of the bezel and tighten the screw until its snug.

How to Replace a Rear Window With a Slider

Trucks come with lots of different options, including solid back glass and sliding rear windows, also known as a slider. While a solid back window offers added security, a slider will allow wind to flow easier throughout the cab, making driving with the windows down a more comfortable experience. It also allows communication with those in a camper, if one is mounted on the truck. If you want to install a sliding back window in your truck, you can do it yourself with the help of an assistant and some hand tools.

    Open the cab doors and use the flathead screwdriver to work the rubber seal around the back window out from the inside of the vehicle towards the outside. The flathead screwdriver can push the rubber lip out, then can be drug around the mounting lip to remove the rubber. Make sure the assistant is holding the glass from the outside while you are pushing out the seal. Then remove the back glass.

    Place the rope in the rubber seal around the slider window, leaving at least 12-inches of rope hanging outside of the rubber seal. Make sure the rope goes around the entire perimeter of the glass and stays in the channel.

    Place the window in the window channel on the cab of the truck with the excess rope on the inside of the vehicle. Have your assistant hold the glass in place while you move to the inside of the vehicle.

    4

    Start to pull one end of the rope, parallel to the ground, while the assistant pushes the glass in towards the interior. This is going to pull the rubber seal out and around the factory lip, mounting the glass in place.

    5

    Continue to pull the rope around the glass while the assistant follows you, pushing in the window. Once youve gone around the entire window, you may have to use the flathead screwdriver to pull some of the rubber seal towards the inside of the cab, just to clean it up a bit.

How to Replace the Pads in the 2006 S40

Volvo introduced the S40 in 1995. The 2006 Volvo S40 was available in both two-wheel and all-wheel drive. Both versions of the 2006 S40 had four-wheel disc brakes available. The disc brake system incorporated the calipers, pads and rotors as the main brake parts for the car. The front disc brake calipers have a piston that compresses by simply pushing it inward. The rear brake calipers have rotating or splined pistons, which need to be rotated while compressing the piston to fit the new brake pads. Replacing all of the pads on all four wheels takes about three to four hours.

2006 Volvo S40: Front Brake Pad Replacement Procedures

    1

    Remove the torque from the wheel lug stems on one front wheel, using a 1/2-inch breaker bar and wheel socket set. Turn the lug stems until they are lightly broken loose from the wheel. The 2006 S40 has lug stems that turn into the wheel hub like bolts, rather than the usual wheel stem with a wheel nut that spins onto it. This inverted version of what most people are used to can be a bit tricky to work with. Lift the Volvo up, one side at a time, with a 2-ton jack or a jack with greater capacity. Place a jack stand underneath the lifted side of the vehicle, beneath the front frame rail. Take off one set of wheel lug stems, then repeat this step on the second front wheel of the car. Remove both front wheels completely from the car.

    Remove the caliper mounting bolts on the rear of one of the brake calipers. The brake caliper is the large metal object wrapped around the metal disc or brake rotor. Remove the brake caliper halfway from the brake assembly, using a small pry bar to assist you. Do not pull the caliper completely off the brake assembly at this time. Insert the small pry bar into the hole on the caliper, placing the tip of the pry bar between the rear brake pad and the brake rotor. Push the handle of the pry bar away from the wheel well, in order to compress the brake caliper piston. Remove the brake caliper when the caliper piston is completely compressed or you can push it in no further.

    Set the caliper onto the lower control arm, directly behind the brake rotor. Do not let the caliper hang freely, or you will damage the brittle rubber hose between the back of the caliper and the frame of the S40. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket, using a small pry bar to pull them loose if necessary. Install the new brake pads onto the caliper mounting bracket. Lubricate the back side of each brake pad (the metal shim side) using a tub of caliper grease. Proper lubrication is crucial to the performance of any automotive brake system.

    Reinstall the brake caliper over the new pads and the brake rotor. Let the caliper sit on the brake assembly. Remove the two metal tubes from the rear of the caliper, which are set inside the little black rubber boots on the rear of the caliper. These tubes are known as the caliper slide tubes. Remove the tubes by pushing them out of one end of each rubber boot. Dip both slide tubes directly into the tub of caliper grease, then reinstall them into their rubber boot housing. Install the caliper mounting bolts back onto the caliper and tighten the mounting bolts between 60 and 70 foot-pounds of torque with a certified torque wrench and socket. Spray the entire brake assembly using a can of aerosol brake parts cleaner, to remove excess grease and greasy fingerprints.

    Repeat Steps 2 through 4 on the other side of the S40 to complete the front pad replacement process. Lift the front side of the Volvo up using a 2-ton jack and remove the jack stand from beneath that side. Reinstall the front wheel and install the lug stems into the wheel hub. Tighten the front wheel to a snug position before dropping that side of the vehicle. Repeat this process on the other side of the Volvo to install the second front wheel. Make sure both sets of wheel lug stems are snug prior to dropping the car to the ground. Tighten the front wheel lug stems to 80 foot-pounds of torque using a certified torque wrench and wheel socket.

2006 Volvo S40: Rear Brake Pad Replacement Procedures

    Remove the torque from the wheel lug stems on one rear wheel, using a 1/2-inch breaker bar and wheel socket set. Turn the lug stems until they are lightly broken loose from the wheel. Lift the Volvo up, one side at a time, with a 2-ton jack or a jack with greater capacity. Place a jack stand underneath the lifted side of the vehicle, beneath the rear axle beam. Take off one set of wheel lug stems, then repeat this step on the second rear wheel of the car. Remove both rear wheels completely from the car.

    Remove the caliper mounting bolts on the rear of one of the rear brake calipers. The brake caliper is the large metal object wrapped around the metal disc or brake rotor. Remove the brake caliper completely from the brake assembly, using a small pry bar to assist you if necessary. Compress the rear caliper, using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 6-inch extension, with a caliper piston tool at the end of the extension. Push the caliper tool against the face of the piston and turn the caliper clockwise with the tool while simultaneously adding pressure to push the piston in. Repeat the compression procedure until the rear caliper piston is completely compressed.

    Set the caliper onto the lower control arm, directly behind the brake rotor. Do not let the caliper hang freely or you will damage the brittle rubber hose between the back of the caliper and the frame of the S40. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket, using a small pry bar to pull them loose if necessary. Install the new brake pads onto the caliper mounting bracket. Lubricate the back side of each brake pad (the metal shim side) using a tub of caliper grease. Proper lubrication is crucial to the performance of any automotive brake system.

    Lift the vehicle from the ground using a car jack. Remove the wheels with a torque wrench and set them aside face up.

    Unscrew the caliper mounting bolts using the torque wrench. Disconnect the caliper assembly making sure to leave the brake line intact.

    Remove the old brake pads. Take out the shims, springs, pad wear indicators and pad support plates.

    Position the new pad support plates onto the torque plate. Place the new pad wear indicators on the new disc brake pads. Verify that the arrow on the indicator plate points in the direction that the wheel rotates.

    Replace the outer shims on the outside of the brake pad assembly. Insert them into the torque plate.

    Push the caliper piston back into the bore. Lay the caliper over the pads and fasten it down. Tighten the caliper mounting bolts.

    Put the wheels back on the Toyota Camry and verify that the brakes operate properly. Replace any necessary brake fluid.

How to Replace the Rotor in a Nissan Pathfinder

If your Nissan Pathfinder seems to be pulsing and shuddering when you hit the brakes but you know that the calipers and brake pads are in good shape, then its time to change the rotors. Rotors only need to be changed if they get worn down and cant be resurfaced or if they become warped from excessive braking. Always change them in pairs for even braking performance.

Change rotors in a 1989 to 1995 Nissan Pathfinder

    Jack up your Nissan Pathfinder with jacks and jack stands. Block the wheels to keep your truck from rolling while you work.

    2

    Take off the tire and wheel assembly with a socket wrench or air ratchet. Remove the brake pads, caliper and bolts and the torque member.

    3

    Remove the grease cap from the hub. Then remove the cotter pin and the castellated nut. This allows you to then remove the old rotor with the wheel hub attached.

    4

    Clean any corrosion or debris from the area using a damp cloth. Apply multipurpose grease to the hubs oil seal lip and then put the new rotor into position with the hub.

    5

    Install the new rotor with the hub back in place and then make sure that the wheel bearings are in good shape and lubricate them. Install the castellated nut with a new cotter pin and then replace the grease cap.

    Put the brake pads, caliper and bolts and the torque member back onto the wheel assembly using a torque wrench. Put the wheel assembly, tire and lug nuts back on and then repeat this process for each new rotor.

    Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts with a torque wrench or air ratchet and pump the brakes. If the brakes seem spongy, bleed the brakes and test your Pathfinder again to make sure that the installation was successful.

Change rotors in a 1996 to 2008 Nissan Pathfinder

    Support your Pathfinder by using a jack and then secure it in place with jack stands. Be sure to place the jack stands so that the weight of the vehicle is properly supported.

    Take off the tire and wheel assembly by loosening the lug nuts and removing them with a socket wrench or air ratchet with an appropriate adapter.

    Remove the caliper and suspend it with mechanics wire to prevent the caliper from getting disconnected from the brake line and to keep it out of the way while you change the rotor.

    Separate the rotor from the wheel assembly. If your Pathfinders rotors are corroded, be sure to remove all debris from the area with a damp cloth before you put the new rotor on.

    Install the new rotor and tighten the holding screws. Replace the caliper and brake line to its original position and then discard the mechanics wire. Install the wheel assembly and the tire.

    Repeat this process to replace the other rotors and then lower the truck and tighten the tire lug nuts with a torque wrench. Road test your pathfinder to make sure the installation was successful.

The brakes on a Honda Civic use a combination of brake pads in the front and brake shoes in the rear. Hydraulic fluid is forced through steel brake lines to a caliper mechanism in the front and a hydraulic piston cylinder in the rear. The fluid forced the brake pads or shoes against a rotor (in the front) or a drum (in the rear). Most of the work done by the brakes in a Honda Civic is done by the front brakes due to the inertia of forward movement. Over time, the brake pads will wear out; once the pad material is 1/8" thick, youll need to replace the brake pads on your Honda Civic.

Break Replacement DIY

    Loosen the wheel lug nuts by turning them 45 degrees counterclockwise.

    2

    Jack up the front of the vehicle. To do this, put the floor jack under the vehicle and jack up on the front jack point of the Civic (located near the radiator--its an extension of the frame).

    3

    Put jack stands underneath the front of the frame or the front pinch welds of the Civic and lower the car onto the jack stands.

    4

    Remove the lug nuts on the front wheels once the Civic is on jack stands.

    5

    Pull the wheels off the wheel hub.

    6

    Remove the upper and lower bolts holding the caliper on the caliper mounting bracket.

    7

    Pull the caliper up off the rotor. Secure it to the coil springs above the rotor.

    8

    Remove the brake pads.

    9

    Press the caliper piston back into the caliper assembly. Place the face of one of the brake pads over the piston and force the pad against the piston with a C-clamp. The piston will collapse back into the caliper housing.

    10

    Insert the new brake pads into the caliper assembly and reassemble the brake assembly.

    Spray the brake rotors and pads and calipers down with brake parts cleaner to remove any remaining brake dust.

    Put the wheel back on the wheel hub and tighten the lug nuts.

    13

    Lower the Civic to the ground and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs.
